The great convert of earliest Christianity, St. Paul became the "Apostle to the Gentiles," and helped spread Christianity beyond its first Jewish adherents. His adventures are made known in the Acts of the Apostles and his various letters of Scripture. Martyred by the sword in 67 CE in Rome, St. Paul was buried there at St. Paul Outside the Walls. This icon is based on a prototype by the great 14th - 15th century Russian master iconographer, Andrei Rublev.
