A tiny nativity set fastened inside a small clay shell. The figures--Baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph, angel, lamb, cow, and donkey--are all formed from clay. Variations in the clay result in some variation of color in the pot. Measures 2.5" high and 3.5" wide at handles. This terracotta piece is made from riverbed clay of the Chenautla area of Guatemala. Families sculpt terracotta pieces by hand, dry it in the sun, paint it with a red clay slip, polish, and then finally fire it. The firing process involves placing the objects on a grate above a pine bark fire with a covering of grass for 2-3 hours. The occasional unique black spot can sometimes be found and is a tribute to this ancient firing process.
