-------------------------
According to Scripture and Tradition, the archangels are one of the nine choirs of angels serving God. They usually are entrusted with special missions. In the stories surrounding the birth of Jesus and John the Baptist, Gabriel delivers particularly important messages from God. He appears to Mary, Joseph, Elizabeth, and Zechariah, to announce the births of the Messiah and his forerunner. In Tradition, Gabriel also appeared to Joachim and Anna to announce the birth of Mary, and to Moses in the desert. In Hebrew, the name Gabriel means “Man of God” or “Strength of God.”
