A German Benedictine abbess, musician, artist, natural healer, and advisor of kings and bishops (1098-1179), St. Hildegard was the Renaissance woman of the Middle Ages. She wrote exquisite chant for her nuns to sing, and documented her various visions in the Scivias. Though for centuries popularly known as a saint, in 2012 Pope Benedict XVI officially canonized her and declared her a doctor of the Church. This particular icon draws on various images of St. Hildegard, and a 17th century Greek prototype of St. Paraskevi.
